We have had some tough things happen. First, we lost three babies to miscarriage in three years. Next, we lost a business in which we and others had invested hundreds of thousands of dollars. My husband had many concussions which have resulted in severe migraines. We have had other losses and health challenges.

Trials come in various forms like persecution, health or relationship issues, or a lack of money. When a trial first hit, our first reaction was to grieve and complain. Then we asked God a question which was suggested by Charles Stanley. “Father, what is your goal for my life in this adversity?” Pastor Stanley challenged us to “surrender to the unknown will of God and trust in His faithfulness”.1 We could not do this in our own strength. We asked the Holy Spirit for help to surrender and trust him. He is loving and he is there to comfort and lead us through every confusing situation.

The Bible challenges us to be joyful when our faith in God is tested, because the trials lead to more spiritual maturity, endurance and inner peace. Through the years, we have gotten to know God better and become more like him. This brings us joy. We are just passing through this world. Our real citizenship is in heaven with Christ.

Dear Lord Jesus, I don’t always like or appreciate the trials I am going through, but I want to obey your word. You didn’t promise me an easy life, but you did promise to be with me and comfort me. What is your goal for me in this trial? Help me to choose to be joyful in you no matter what. Thank you for helping me, Holy Spirit.

Throughout this day: Consider your present trials. If things are going well, think about past trials. Choose to lean into God and his word and trust him more. He has a plan for you to become more like Christ. Remember that this world is not our home.
