Have you ever been to Niagara Falls? One of the things that strikes many first time visitors is the sheer volume of sound when they near the Falls. The sound of water cascading over the edge, whether on the Canadian or US side, is amazing. Then to realize that much of the water’s flow has been diverted for hydroelectric power helps one to realize the potential energy flowing through that location. The numbers are almost beyond the average person’s imagination.

“The amount of electricity the power plants at Niagara Falls have the capacity to output is close to 4.9 million kilowatts. That’s enough to power 3.8 millions homes.” 1 That’s a lot of power, a lot of homes!

It is said that one-fifth of all freshwater on earth flows through the Falls at Niagara. The capacity is amazing, yet it is dwarfed when compared to our Mighty Lord.

An ancient prayer used during the Advent season, one which expresses the longing for a mighty Redeemer, communicates it this way in translation from the original Latin:

O LORD AND RULER of the House of Israel, who appeared to Moses in the flame of the burning bush and gave him the law on Sinai: COME, and redeem us with outstretched arms. Amen.

In Micah 5:2 the prophet foretold that there would be a ruler to arise in the town of Bethlehem, one who would be from the house of Judah. In Matthew 2:6 the author ties this prophecy in with the birth of Jesus Christ.

Today we can look back and rejoice in the coming of this Redeemer, the Mighty Ruler of Israel. Rejoice with me. The Mighty Lord has come!

Thank you, God, for Jesus. Give me the humility to live under his rule today. I surrender to your perfect power, love and authority. In Jesus' name. Amen.
