Growing up on Nebraska’s Great Plains, I can still remember the thunderstorms that would roll for miles over the prairie, bringing into powerful focus the majesty of God! Often, as a storm would end, and the sun would filter through the clouds, we would be treated to brilliant, sky-wide rainbows. They reminded us that storms always passed. And the rainbow displayed God’s glory in a different, vivid way.

I have always been struck by the promise of the rainbow in Genesis 9:14-15. After the catastrophic flood that wiped out most of earth’s life, God gave the remains of Adam’s race a symbol of hope. Out of judgment came a sure future. It was God’s promise.

Having been exiled to Babylon with the unfaithful people of Judah, the prophet Ezekiel also experienced a rainbow — this time showing the awesome glory of God. Only a mighty God can save, and he was about to reveal, as the book of Ezekiel foretold, his plan to revive his lost ones.

Is the rainbow still a symbol of hope for God’s people? Undoubtedly yes! Only the God of Glory can truly provide help and hope.

Have you lost hope? Are you in the midst of a storm that seems like it will never end? Remember God’s promise is like his bow in the clouds. Even if you cannot always see it, it is always there. He still cares and will always bring hope to those who look to him.

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us symbols of hope in our storms. Thank you that you never desert those who put their trust in you. Amen.
