Such simple words. Such a magnificent result. Jesus, with unmistakable authority, publically displayed His power over the forces of decay and death.

According to historian Rodney Stark, Christians survived the great plagues that devastated the Roman Empire in greater numbers than their unbelieving neighbors because they cared for their sick rather than casting them out in hopes of saving their own lives. Why? They had hope of everlasting life.

The hope of life forever has always been at the heart of Christian faith. Two people came to the door of a woman in my church selling their empty religious doctrine. “I will see my mother again,” she told them with such great conviction that they began to weep. “If only we could have the hope you do,” they said.

Have you lost someone you love? Are you aging or sick and feel death coming closer? Jesus has power over life and death. It is exactly the same as it was on that day in Bethany at Lazarus’ tomb. Don’t fail to notice how personally Jesus called out. “Lazarus,” He said, “Come out.” One day you will hear Him call your name, and you will step forth into a new life that will never end.

Let this great hope infuse your being. This is a hope that changes everything. Let it change your life, too. Hold fast to the hope that is in Christ who, on that great day, will call all who have lived and loved Him to life forever.

Lord, I want to live in the hope of your resurrection which is the guarantee of mine, too. Thank you for giving me a hope so very real and true. Amen.

Throughout This Day — There are many ways that life becomes different for people who have the hope of life without end. Think of at least one that makes a difference in your life today.
