Mother Teresa said, “We are all pencils in the hand of a writing God, who is sending love letters to the world.”   I love this quote. If we are pencils in the hands of a writing God, then that means he is involved in our lives. He is influential in our activities and those of others whether they realize it or not. We may fool ourselves into thinking we are writing our own history, but as children of God, we know that he holds every moment in his hands.   Another quote says, “Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil. It has no point.” In other words, it is dull and not of much use. The Christian’s joy is in serving a God of love.

However, it is up to us to stay sharpened. We can become “used” up in serving God. When our stored-up faith wears down our “lead,” we won’t be an instrument of much use to him. So how do we stay sharp?   Through the Holy Spirit’s guidance. It may be uncomfortable, but let’s be willing to be put in the sharpener for a good grind every now and then. That means spending time in the Word, listening to the Holy Spirit, and yielding to our Lord’s will even if it grates on our will.    Let’s go through the process of shaving away whatever is keeping us from being his instruments of righteousness and allow him to write his love message on our lives for others to see.

Grind away, Lord. I want to be sharp for you. Remove anything that keeps me from being your instrument for your writing your love message for others to read. Amen.   Throughout This Day: If you notice that something or someone is drawing you away from living for the Lord wholeheartedly, turn quickly to God to ask him to help you overcome that temptation so he can use you to draw others to him.
