It’s a presidential election year in the U.S. It feels as though every ad on social media, every TV commercial and every newscast has something to say on the matter. All of the candidates are making their promises. Each one is warning about the disastrous effects of voting for their opponents. The citizens are taking sides.

Governments are different in each country. Politics vary wildly across the planet. But no matter your country’s political philosophy or practice, the people in charge affect everyone under their rule.

It is important to know about policies and the key players who affect those policies. If given the opportunity, we must raise our voices and cast our votes to implement justice and dignity for all people.

But while each party or player tries to out-smart the others, in a few years there will be another election. Those who hold office now will be replaced. Kings and dictators who reign now will be gone. The good and the bad will go the way of all things on the earth and others will take their places.

However, there is only one Ruler who has sat on the throne since the creation of the world. His name is Jehovah and he brings peace, justice and salvation to all people of every government, country and land. He alone is our hope above all earthly powers. Whoever calls on his name and believes in his son, Jesus will be a citizen of Heaven.

So when imperfect men rise to power, take comfort in the fact that a perfect, loving, righteous God is still Ruler of all.

Sovereign Lord, I am so grateful that you are the only eternal ruler of this world. Thank you that even when I see imperfect people in power, I can trust that you are still working out your perfect will. Please give me wisdom to do my part as a citizen to elect good rulers, and then to trust you for the results.

For Today: Another verse to consider is Colossians 1:16-17, which emphasizes how all things and all powers were established by God. In this time of political turmoil, read these verses and rest in this truth.

If you don’t know Jesus, continue reading in Colossians 1, through verse 23 to learn more about the Good News.
