While in the Bahamas with our sweet granddaughter and daughter, we were in a frightening situation due to a storm at sea. As we left Harbor Island, the combination of strong winds, large waves, and potential lightning strikes created a nerve-wracking situation for all of us on board. We were more than 50 miles away from our next stop, and as the sky darkened, we knew we were in danger.
It was an anxious time and none of us were really sure what to expect, but we chose faith and to trust the LORD. We began praying, and I quoted scripture about God’s presence and his help, while reassuring the girls we would be ok.
Thankfully, the captain spotted a narrow stretch of rocky shore, where he was able to make an emergency landing, although as the boat lurched forward, it began to sink deeper. The passengers rushed off with panic and urgency. What a relief that the dire situation was over! We thanked God that when we cried out to him, he held us.
Today’s passage is a powerful reminder of the Lord’s presence, strength, and support when we are afraid. Yet we are still faced with the challenge: how can we actually live without fear, when life is overwhelming and there are times of uncertainty?
Some practical steps include acknowledging our fears and not pretending that they do not exist. Facing our fear, we choose to believe that God is in control of everything, praying, and casting our cares upon him because we know he cares for us. (Psalm 55:22) We must also remember that we are not alone and that God is always with us. Many times, fear grows in isolation, and remembering that God will never leave or forsake us can calm our anxieties and panic (Hebrews 13:5). Lastly, reading scripture and memorizing it can strengthen us by giving us an eternal perspective, focusing us on God’s attributes, and deepening our trust in him. Let us watch God transform our fears and adversities for good when we lean into his presence and trust him to strengthen us through our storms.
Dear Lord, thank you that you go before us and strengthen us with your righteous hand. Thank you for being steady and true in our times of uncertainty, and for being our Savior whom we can trust with every circumstance, knowing that you will help us and support us. Help us to have the courage to face our fears, and to know that you are faithful to see us through. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
