As a young mother I often prayed that my children would always know that God will always take care of them.

I was going to school to be trained for a job when my husband lost his job. We applied for assistance and were approved but the first payment hadn’t come through yet.

This particular morning I held off breakfast as long as I could. I had enough flour to make pancakes for our brunch and apples to make a topping for the pancakes and then all that I had in my cupboard was a box of salt. I had about an inch of milk on the bottom of the milk jug in the fridge. It was late in the afternoon and my husband was on the phone for a job interview. I was at the kitchen table praying and asking God to provide food for my children. My daughter opened the fridge and asked if this is what it meant to be poor.

I sent them all out to play and took a step of faith. I opened the cupboard and took out a pan, filled it with water and put it on the stove to boil. My kids came in, saw that the fridge was still empty and wanted to know what I was doing. “I’m getting ready to cook what God is going to provide.” My oldest daughter looked at me as though I was crazy. By this time all the kids were in the kitchen. I told them to sit down and we were going to thank God for what He was going to feed us. When they finished I thanked Him for what we were going to eat and pleaded with my Father to show my children that he would always meet their needs. We said Amen.

The doorbell rang. Two women whom I had never seen before were at my door. They seemed to know all about my family, and said that they had a few things in their car for us.

It was a fancy car with a remote opener for the trunk. My young son slammed it shut just so that he could see it open again. Out came a laundry basket full of frozen meat and frozen vegetables. And, six bags of canned goods, luncheon meat, bread and more. We had steak, rice and broccoli for supper and brownies for dessert. There was an envelope with money in it as well. Our gas tank was empty and it was enough to fill it. There was enough food to last until our assistance came through.

I don’t know if those ladies were angels or people from the neighbourhood but I will always remember how God took care of us and my children learned that day that God will always meet our every need.

Father God, I am so grateful for your faithful provision throughout my life. Thank you for the privilege of helping my children, grandchildren or others you bring into my life, to also see your faithfulness and trust in you.

Today’s challenge: Who has built into your life? If you’re able, why not thank them today? Or, consider prayerfully whose life God is asking you to build into. Make a plan for the next step you will take.
