Sometimes God just calls us to step out in obedience and faith. There was once a time when he called my husband and me to respond in this way.

It was around Christmas when a missionary visited our church and spoke of the wells they had been digging in India to provide fresh water to the remote villages there. Our church body was challenged to consider covering the cost for one of the wells. This was a difficult time to ask for such a gift, given the cost that the Christmas season can require. But on our way home, my husband and I were surprised to learn that we had both felt God prompting us to give more than we normally would. So we gave (though a little begrudgingly, if I’m honest).

A week later, I opened our mailbox and found a random reimbursement check for double the amount that we had given for the digging of the wells. We had not been expecting this check so it came as a surprise. But the check did not come alone. Later that same day, we learned of a couple of families that were in need of a little financial help. The combined amount that was needed was the exact amount of the check. So we gave (a little less begrudgingly this time).

Soon after Christmas came, and with it, a larger than normal financial gift from a family member. Again, we learned of another need for the money. This time we laughed to ourselves as we again gave. We were quickly learning that our money was not our own. That God had instead, used us to funnel his money to support his children in need.

This pattern went on a couple of more times before the money went out and didn’t come back. In the end, God had provided for everyone’s needs, including our own. All because we listened and obeyed in faith.

This exercise taught us a few valuable lessons. We learned how joyful it can be to give when God asks, we learned how good he is to help in that task, and we were incredibly blessed to have a front row seat to his handiwork.

Please know that if God calls you to something, he is good and will provide all you need for it. Whether it is a call to service, to love, or to generosity, he will not leave you stranded. Do not hesitate to listen and to obey in generosity. You will only be left with a heart full of thanksgiving and blessings if you do!

Heavenly Father, you are so good. Thank you for providing all I need to carry out your plans. Thank you for not setting me up for failure when I choose to obey you. Please help me to step out in faith knowing that you will not leave my side. Please help me to obey. Amen

Throughout this Day: Ask God what you can do for him. Ask him who you can give generously to this year. Ask him to provide all that you need in order to carry out all that he asks. Then wait for him to reveal to you the next steps.
