Is there someone in your life you wish you could embrace again, but the hurt feels too fresh, and the wounds too deep to step forward? At the beginning of this year, I was faced with such a broken relationship, a close family member betrayed my trust, and the silence that followed felt suffocating. It’s the kind of pain that cuts the deepest because it comes from a place that should be safe and secure. For a long time, forgiveness felt like a distant, impossible dream. I needed space not only for that person to reflect on what happened but also for my own heart to heal and find peace.

I began to understand that forgiveness isn’t about overlooking the hurt or pretending the damage wasn’t real. It’s about releasing the chains that bind our hearts to anger and pain, and choosing freedom over bitterness. Like Jacob, returning hesitantly to face his brother Esau after years of separation and fear, I took a step of cautious faith. Esau’s response, a running embrace filled with tears, reminds me that restoration is possible. Even the deepest wounds can be healed by grace.

Today, our relationship has been restored; we laugh again, but my heart holds a quiet resolve never to face that same hurt again. Sometimes it takes God’s quiet intervention to soften hearts and pave the way for healing. Maybe today is the day to consider the barriers around your heart and ask God for the courage to let them down.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your grace. When I face the pain of betrayal and find it hard to forgive, soften my heart that has grown closed. Help me to trust your perfect timing as I journey toward healing. You’ve shown mercy to me even when I did not deserve it, teach me to extend that same mercy, love, and forgiveness to those who've hurt me deeply. Restore our hearts and bring us to a place of true healing, peace, and unity. Amen.

Throughout this Day: Is there someone you’ve kept at a distance because the hurt feels too big to handle? Today, think of one small, manageable step you can take whether it’s a prayer for them, a message to check in, or simply letting go of a resentful thought.
