We live in a world that’s more connected than ever — but many of us feel lonelier than ever too. As Dawson McAllister writes, “Human beings are wired for connection,” yet scrolling through highlight reels on social media often leaves us feeling empty and distant1.

That’s where stepping into real, vulnerable relationships becomes radical.

Hebrews 10:24–25 urges us to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another”. It’s more than a suggestion—it’s the way God designed us. God's children thrive when they live and follow Jesus in community!

When we’re facing loneliness, we’re not really alone. Psalm 23:4 reminds us, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley… you are with me”. Isaiah echoes this: “So do not fear… I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you” (Isaiah 41:10). Jesus promises, “And surely I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). These verses aren’t clichés — they’re lifelines!

Here are some practical ways to consider to combat loneliness:

  1. Unplug to connect. Use your phone to plan in-person time — coffee dates, walks, Bible studies — but then put the phone down.
  2. Listen first. Sometimes people don’t need advice. They just need to be heard.
  3. Choose vulnerability. Sharing your own ups and downs invites others to do the same.
  4. Serve meaningfully. Whether it’s volunteering, helping a neighbor, or a small kind gesture, doing lifts both you and others from isolation.
  5. Join a community. Be that person who shows up—whether for a small group, sports team, or hobby meetup.

Choose something you can do this week — send a text, meet someone in person, or think about new ways you can serve the Lord.

Jesus, thank you for never leaving or forsaking me. Open my eyes to those who feel unseen and unheard. Teach me to step out of my comfort zone — unplugged, present, and connected. Help me be the kind of friend who listens, serves, and encourages. Amen.
