Have you ever felt a hunger deep within youthat nothing seems to satisfy? Like the lyrics in the famous U2 song, “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.”

We tend to feed our hunger and try everything we can to satisfy it. Will it be a new house or vehicle? Do we just need a vacation or a party? “There is a food,” Jesus said, that you don’t realize will actually bring a satisfaction in your soul, a satisfaction deeper than satisfying hunger.

The disciples came back from town and were shocked to find Jesus speaking with a Samaritan woman. The disciples were convinced that Jesus just needed to eat something.

Jesus declares, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” It makes me chuckle because the disciples continue to discuss food and thought someone else fed Jesus.

Then Jesus discloses the truth. “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” Mid conversation with the disciples, the Samaritans begin making their way toward Jesus. Likely pointing to the crowd, Jesus said, “I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”

The Lord’s food for us is doing the will of God, being willing to be sent, and finishing what the Lord assigns us — pointing people to Him! Then others too will discover this satisfying food and begin to do the will of the Father who sent Jesus and sends us.

Father God, help us seek you and your will for our lives, to do all that you have assigned for us. Like Jesus, we want to experience the satisfaction from the food we know nothing about…doing your will and finishing your work. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen!

Go Deeper — Spend time with Jesus and ask Him if there are ways you are trying to satisfy your soul apart from Him. Are you willing to leave those things behind in order to seek to follow Jesus wholeheartedly and to do His will? What steps do you need to take? Ask Him!
