Hearing of a new craft technique or seeing a flyer in a craft store often leads to a new project for a friend of mine. One January she announced to a number of us that she would keep a list that year, "Finished Projects." Each time a project was completed, she'd put it on the list, and often we would hear, "This project is finished!" That next January we were amazed at how much had been accomplished, and the joy with which she was able to share the fruit of her labors with a number of people around her.

As I think about finishing something well, I remember other friends. Sometimes it has been a term paper completed, a major work project approved, or a loan that's finally paid in full.

Then I remember another friend who proclaimed, "It is finished!" He knew of a debt, and knew that there was no way humanly possible for those involved to pay it on their own. This debt was the payment for sin. My sin (wrongs) had separated me from God. Even if I were perfect for the rest of my life, it would not repay the wrongs I'd done or make me right with God.

Jesus Christ took the burden of my sin upon himself one day on Calvary, and made full payment for my sin. He was able to cry out from the cross, "It is finished, paid in full!" He did not make a down payment, and leave me with the balance due. No, he proclaims, "Finished!" He died in my place, and three days later physically rose from the grave in victory.

He offers the gift of forgiveness, a restored relationship with God, and eternal life. He wants to share the blessings of his completed work with me! It is not something I could earn. The only choice is to accept or reject the offer of his gift. His work on the cross has made it possible for him to offer that gift to you, as well. Have you by faith received that as a gift from him? If so, rejoice! Your debt has been paid in full.

Lord Jesus, I know you died for me, and have paid the penalty for my sin. You proclaimed that the work is finished. You rose again in victory. I have received the gift you offer. Thank you for the truth that you have finished the work! Help me live today in light of that truth. Amen.

Throughout this day: Have you ever personally received the gift of forgiveness and eternal life that Jesus Christ offers, based on his death and resurrection? Are you trying to earn it on your own? If you have chosen today to believe in Jesus Christ and receive this gift, we would love to know. One of our trained mentors will respond by email with encouragement. If you have questions first, we welcome those as well.
