It is interesting that as Jesus was led into the wilderness to face a test in the spiritual realm, the preparation was fasting. In Jesus’ denying himself physically he prepared himself for the spiritual battle with principalities and powers that was coming.

Christ affirms the historical lesson from the wilderness in Exodus where God prepared a rebellious people to enter the promised land. The experience of hunger and God’s provision of food brought the strength to accomplish God’s purposes:

“Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” (Deuteronomy 8:2-3, NIV)

Both experiences had the same purpose: to humble and test in preparation for a new chapter. Both were to illustrate that the temporal alone will not satisfy. In both passages God’s supernatural presence was experienced. In both, God provided everything that was needed when the fasting was complete.

Through fasting, God invites us into the invisible spiritual realm to experience his preparation for his plan and for his glory.

*Jesus, thank you for your example of how to focus on the spiritual realm through fasting. I long to grow in my relationship with you. As you followed the Spirit’s direction into a time of fasting so guide me. May your will be accomplished in my life to your glory. Amen. *

Consider this: Have you ever tried fasting, even for short periods of time, giving up just one or two meals? Consider setting aside time for fasting and prayer.
