There was something I needed to stay focused on at work. It required a whole day’s effort to finish the task. Unfortunately, I had a few other pressing items on my to-do list, which also needed attention that day.

These other assignments were urgent but not dependent on me to get them done.

I sometimes get into this mindset of trying to do everything by myself and end up not finishing anything at all. I had to make time to focus on this assignment, prioritizing it over everything else.

I handed off some work to others who were more than capable of completing it, which helped me dodge a meltdown of sorts and ultimately made me more productive.

We hear in Matthew 5 that we are the “salt of the earth” and “light of the world,” and all of us are part of this mission Christ gives us, which is to invite all people to enter God’s Kingdom.

However, he does not expect us to be lone wolves in this missionary effort. As brothers and sisters in Christ, God wants us to operate as co-missionaries. He chose to depend on us, the body of Christ, to carry forward this important work of salvation.

Are we intentionally allowing busyness to distract us from our call to be the salt of the earth and light of the world? Is our heart tangled up with other concerns and desires, causing us to lose sight of our priorities as Christians?

Let us make sharing the good news of salvation a priority. We cannot allow busyness to distract us from what Jesus considers a top priority.

Our Lord is calling on us, who are united together in Christ, to be beacons of hope and love that draw our lost brothers and sisters floundering in darkness back to the Kingdom.

Lord, give me a heart eager to bring others into your Kingdom. Let my actions and words be a light of kindness and compassion, drawing others back into your sheepfold. Amen.

Throughout This Day: See how you are the salt of earth and light of the world as you interact with the people God brings into your life.
