Do we want to increase the effectiveness of our prayer life?

We can learn a lot from Elijah’s effectual prayer life. In order to be effective, prayer must derive from the Word of God, for without faith it is impossible to please him, and faith “cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).

I was recently informed that my parents had contracted COVID-19, and because of this news, along with other events, I felt very overwhelmed. I felt helpless because there was seemingly nothing I could do for my parents. I couldn’t even be by their side — or that is what Satan wanted me to think.

In fact, I possess the most powerful weapon on earth to protect myself and my family — the sword of the Spirit and prayer. I often use the acronym P.R.A.Y. as a way to guide my prayer. Praise, repent, ask, and yield. I have persistently prayed for my parents' healing and in my weaknesses and insufficiency, I have turned to the One who is worthy of glory, honor, and power.

It is said that James was nicknamed “camel knees” because of the calluses that developed on his knees from long hours of praying. James was deeply influenced by Elijah. The Book of James says more about prayer than any other New Testament book.

Are you faced with a difficult situation or trial? Then place it before God. Meditate afresh on his promises and ask the Lord to strengthen your faith as you pray, using Scripture to become an effective prayer warrior.

Jesus, thank you for listening to my prayers and responding to my cries for help. I know I will accomplish little of eternal significance apart from prayer. Guide and deepen my prayer life so that you may be glorified. Amen.

Go Deeper — If things are beyond your control, put them in the hands of the One who is in control. Just don’t try to yank them back!
