In 2014, I decided to go for a 7,604 kilometer (4,725 miles) bike ride! It was a charity ride across Canada with three friends. For two of us, it was a ride to celebrate our sixtieth birthdays. As you might imagine, conserving energy was a priority in our plan. Drafting became a key strategy.

In the cycling world, drafting occurs when a cyclist moves into a specific area behind another cyclist, reducing the wind resistance and the energy required to maintain speed. The optimum distance between cyclists is about 20 inches/50 centimeters. This technique can give about a thirty percent greater efficiency.

The lead cyclist sets the pace and path for the ride. A cyclist drafting behind focuses on one thing: the rear tire of the lead rider. I can speak from experience that losing focus causes loss of effectiveness and can also cause accidents and injury!

The phrase “fixing our eyes on Jesus” might have some parallels. Think about the number of times Jesus invited others to “follow” him.

Drafting requires trust and cooperation before the benefits can be experienced. The benefits of following Jesus can only be realized when there is a willingness to trust that he can lead us and has the best pace and path for us. We must — with intentionality — release fears, selfish desires, and anything else that would distract us, allowing him to lovingly refine and perfect each of our skills at tucking in behind his lead!

Jesus, may your Spirit convict me in the moments that I strike out on a path of independence from your leadership. May I learn the sweet rhythm of drafting close behind you. Build my endurance in the pursuit of what is good and make me sensitive to the sin that would hinder and entangle me. Thank you for your grace and presence with me. Amen.

Go Deeper — Are there hindrances or entanglements that are keeping you from the joy of freely following Jesus? What are the distractions that put you in danger? Do you trust that Jesus has the best path and pace?
