Years ago I hand-sawed a few low hanging branches off a tree in my backyard. I went inside. After a half hour I went out to drag them away.

I was astonished that the leaves had already withered. The branches were severed from their source of life. It has been a lasting illustration about how essential abiding in the Lord is. Our verse says that we can do absolutely nothing if we do not abide in Jesus. Abide means to remain, stay, or dwell in vital union. Our spiritual roots feed on his Word.

Psalm 1:3 says of one who meditates, “He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
I love to meditate on God’s Word. I take a phrase and chew on it like cows ruminate on their food. They bring it up several times until it is well digested. Throughout the day I ponder what it means, and compare Scripture with Scripture.

The Lord invites us into intimate communion with him. It is a great privilege for every one of his disciples. We do it through his Word. I personally want nothing on this earth to rival my intimate communion with him.

We are created for fellowship with him. His children are his delight. When I wake up earlier than my time to get up, I lean into his presence by rehearsing what he means to me. My reference comes from his Word.

Lord Jesus, thank you for dying for me. Without your grace-strength I would not even be able to navigate through my hard trials. I am so grateful to commune with you through your Word. Thank you for our vital union. I love you Lord.

Throughout this day: Pray and worship the Lord through this song based on today’s scripture: Abide in Me
