“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Luke 16:13

This Christmas, be consumed by your love for God.

Keep Christ in Christmas. Jesus is the reason for the season. Not presents but His presence.

Though these clichés are a bit groan-worthy, there is truth to them. After all, they get at the heart of what is wrong with the Christmas season: the overabundance of stuff.

Somehow, the presents have turned into the reason we celebrate. We love imagining what’s underneath the wrapping paper, and we anticipate seeing our loved ones open up the gift we have spent weeks looking for.

But the moment we devote our lives to the stuff is the moment we stop worshiping Jesus.

So don’t be consumed by presents this season. Instead, be overwhelmed by the presence of your Savior.

Dear God, thank You for Christmas, this time of year when we celebrate that You sent Your Son to save the world. Give us perspective, Lord, in a culture that loves its stuff. Help us to worship You with all our hearts this season. Amen.
