Can God Really be Trusted?

Have you ever been in a situation where you just couldn’t see a way out no matter how hard you looked? You tried everything you knew to try, over and over, and it just didn’t seem to work. Or maybe you’ve lost something very dear to you, and life seems hopeless. What do we do in these trying times?

From an early age, I was taught Scripture and Bible stories, including the story of Job. Out of all the stories in the Bible, Job’s impacted me very much. As a child, I was very happy to learn that God restored to Job what he had lost, but as I grew older I understood more layers of the story.

A few years ago, I was in a setting in which young people learned and talked about the Bible. The subject was the story of Job. One young lady declared that she thought God was unfair in the situation and owed Job an explanation. I understood where she was coming from, but had to point out that we won’t always understand God and his ways. Even so, he can be trusted.

One of my favorite professors in college started a podcast in which he read and discussed scripture. The day after his discussion of the book of Job, he passed away of a sudden heart attack. His family will never fully understand why this happened, but they have the testimony that, like Job, he trusted God with his last breath. Now he will live with God forever.

Job knew God and trusted him. He trusted that God was testing him, and was determined to pass that test. As we walk with God through trials, we too, can pass the test of faith, allowing God to demonstrate faithful he is, and proving true, like gold, as he refines us.

Dear Father, thank you that you can be trusted. No matter what. Help us keep this truth close to our hearts when things get tough. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Throughout this Day: Is there a situation in your life in which you struggle to trust God? How can you honor him today by acknowledging that he can be trusted?
