When I’m stewing on a problem that’s bigger than I am, people tend to offer two kinds of help. Some people want to solve the problem for me. While they get busy “fixing” things, I still may feel lonely, frightened, and helpless.

Others come alongside, talk me through the problem, and help me see things in a new way. They don’t fix my situation. Instead, they help me escape the grip of fear and find a way forward.

When Jesus showed up, walking across water during a life-threatening storm, he offered both kinds of help to his disciples. Look at the sequence of events. Yes, the wind ceased and that’s the miracle we remember. But that happened last.

First, Jesus told his disciples who he was. “It’s me.” Some translations say, “It’s really me — I AM!” Walking on the water confirmed his claim. God himself had come to their aid, and they should take heart.

But he didn’t just deliver his message. He got in the boat with them, sharing the risk and sharing his strength and courage. After he addressed their fears and loneliness, that’s when he took care of the pesky problem of the waves.

The next time we’re being swamped, let’s remember that God is in the boat with us. That is all we need. He will either fix the situation or help us through it.

Father, the next time howling winds assail me, let me look for you, sitting in the boat with me. You are always with me. Let me live with that peace. Amen.
