God, through Hosea, showed his disdain for Israel by likening her to an unfaithful mother chasing after lovers to make her happy, only to find that God had blocked her way. Eventually, she decides that she’s better off with them.

Certain commentators say these “lovers” represent Egypt and Assyria, two powerful neighbors of Israel who sported political power and wealth. More practically, what did they offer Israel in this passage?

“Food and water” were survival basics, yet so easily taken as statements about living well and being better than one’s neighbor.

“Wool and linen” were protective garments, yet often turned into showy glitz. Today the fashion industry promises us the same thing — image, status, and acceptance — should we buy in.

“Oil and drink” referred to perfume and wine that made God’s people pretty and feel good. For Israel, they had become idols to prop up appearance and soothe souls.

Is it possible we do the same today? According to the 2019 World Happiness Index, people should be happier today with crime and unemployment down, and income per capita up. But we aren’t, and some experts think that’s due to the explosion of social media. There we promote our amazing lives, only to see the same things spouted by all our friends.

Little by little we get that gnawing sense that our lunch, outfit, or portrait doesn’t measure up to everyone else’s. Maybe it’s time to reflect on what we’re chasing after.

Ever feel frustrated? Even blocked? Perhaps God is graciously blocking your efforts in order to draw you to himself.

Dear God, it is so easy today to get caught up in material things that I think will meet my deepest needs. Help me see anew that my identity rests in you and that purpose and joy are found in relationship with you. Grant me the strength to stop chasing after things that don’t matter and to curb my social media promotion so I don’t get caught up in the envy game. Amen.

Go Deeper — Do you tend to be envious of others’ lifestyles and successes? If you catch yourself thinking such thoughts today, will you halt for a moment and instead thank God for the blessings he has poured out on you?
