“God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

I love lightning and thunderstorms! Thankfully, I live in a place where we experience a good amount of both, and I am always in awe as I sit on my porch and watch the heavens light up. Most people are scared of thunder and avoid the danger of lightning (with good reason). But I enjoy them because I am reminded of the omnipotence of God and His omnipresence during the storm.

The psalmist reminds us that even in the midst of the dark times and the storms of our life, we can run underneath the cover and refuge of our Lord. He is everywhere at all times, not limited to time or space. As such, He is actively present in every situation we face — with or without our acknowledgment — and He may reveal Himself in any way He chooses. We just have to listen for His voice amidst the loud thunder, and be still as we wait for the storm to pass.

God of Heaven and Earth, I thank You for being ever present in my life, and for being my refuge and strength. I thank You for being the same yesterday, today, and forever. Amen.

Take Action

When you witness your next thunderstorm or bolt of lightning, be reminded of God’s power and thank Him for His cover. When you are in the midst of a dark period or facing a storm of your own, ask the Lord to open His arms of protection and find refuge there.
