What does God’s care look like?

This passage is likely one of the most common passages of Numbers, and is quoted by Christians and Jews alike. It is like a rich tapestry of promises that God gives to Moses, which Aaron and his sons were to use to bless the people of Israel in the wilderness.

Still today, we are given this promise, as God’s people, that he will be with us and give us good things, despite what we may be going through. But what does that promise look like in action?

When I consider this question, I think of a time when I was a child, carrying a bottle of ketchup to my grandparents’ house next door. At that age, I wasn’t always careful of my step and I almost tripped going up the porch steps. The amazing thing about that experience was the next thought I had: “that must have been one of God’s angels holding me up.” I love that even at that young age, God was revealing his care to me. (A little girl losing her balance holding an oversized ketchup would not have been a pretty sight).

A second thing I think of when I read this passage is the song that was made popular a few years ago, right smack in the middle of Covid. This song, called, “The Blessing.” The lyrics are the exact words of this featured passage. A virtual choir sang their rendition of the song. It gained views from all over the world, which I am sure blessed many with comfort and peace during this trying time.

I love that song because it is a testimony of this passage being played out in the most difficult time in recent history. It is a reminder that God does not promise we will not go through hard times, but the blessing of His presence will be with us as we remember Him.

Dear Father, thank you for the blessing of your presence and for how you keep us. Help us be aware of that today. Amen.

Throughout this day: Whether it’s an early memory or something as recent as Covid, I challenge you to recall a time when the blessing of God’s presence was with you.

Here is the song, “The Blessing”:
