Have you ever considered how you would respond if Jesus walked into your life today? In this verse, we witness a startling reaction. Jesus had just delivered two demon-possessed men who had been living among the tombs, isolated and tormented. These men, once feared by their community, were now free. But instead of celebrating this miracle, the entire town begged Jesus to leave. Why would anyone reject such a powerful act of compassion?

The answer lies in what it cost them. The demons Jesus cast out entered a herd of pigs, which then plunged into the sea and drowned. For the herdsmen and the townspeople, this was a financial loss they weren’t prepared to accept. Their focus wasn’t on the restored lives of the men but on what they had lost. They saw Jesus as a disruption to their way of life, a threat to their comfort and security.

This story challenges us to reflect on our own hearts. How often do we resist Jesus because his presence requires change? Following him demands surrender, letting go of old habits, comforts, or even material possessions that stand in the way of his work in our lives. Like the townspeople, we can become so fixated on what we might lose that we miss the transformative power of what he offers.

Consider whether you will welcome Jesus into your life, no matter the cost Or will you push him away because his presence feels inconvenient? Don’t let fear or attachment to worldly things keep you from experiencing his freedom and grace. Open your heart and let him transform you.

Dear Lord, thank you for your love and power to transform lives. Help me to surrender fully to you, even when it’s uncomfortable or costly. May I never reject your presence but embrace your work in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Throughout this day: Reflect on this question. What might you be holding onto that keeps you from fully welcoming Jesus into your life? Take time today to surrender those areas and invite him to bring transformation and freedom.
