It sold for 6 million in April of 2024!
What could be worth so much? A rare painting? No, it was the Superman Action Comics #1 published April 18, 1938. The comic was created by a recent high school grad author, Jerry Siegel and artist classmate Joe Shuster. In 1938, it sold for 10 cents!
Popular culture is captivated with the superhero theme. Hollywood is making huge profits. Why? I wonder if there is a spiritual root? Maybe God has put into our human soul a desire to live beyond our human limits?
In fact, God commands us to be filled with his Spirit. We are commanded to be directed and empowered by the Holy Spirit on a moment by moment basis. Think about it, no matter how good you are at anything, God is better! We are intended to be superheroes through his empowerment. To embrace this requires a humble response.
A friend told me he felt inadequate. My response surprised him: “You are inadequate, that’s why you need God’s resources.” We can live a supernatural life. God intended it that way. He gave us His Spirit. Every person that has invited Christ into their life, has God’s Spirit living in them.
The difficult step is the daily surrender. We are a prideful lot! Each morning I wake up and confess to God, “God let me start this day right, I’m not adequate. I need you. I need your supernatural resources in every element of this day.”
God, thank you for the amazing gift of your Spirit in my life! I confess I often depend on my own resources, which is foolish when you offer so much more. I yield each area of my life to you and invite you to direct and empower me today. Amen
For Today: Ask the question, “Who’s better at this, me or God?” Let God make you a superhero!
