This horrifying royal declaration brought fear and consternation to the hearts of people throughout the Persian Empire. Haman’s hatred of one Jew, Mordecai, had devolved into an act of vengeance aimed at destroying all Jews living from India to Ethiopia (Esther1.1).

None of them knew that a chosen deliverer had been placed in the palace, within reach of the ruthless king who was so callously condemning many citizens to death. This deliverer was neither a seasoned warrior like David nor a man of miracles like Moses. Dreams, visions, and prophecies would not guide and embolden this chosen one named Esther, an orphan from an ordinary Jewish family raised by Haman’s enemy, Mordecai. This beautiful Jewish woman, placed in an exalted position for such a time as this, would soon risk her life for the sake of her people and see an amazing deliverance occur.

The book of Esther never mentions God directly even once. Yet, it teaches us that he is continually at work behind the scenes, knitting various small circumstances together in such a way that they manifest his sovereignty, his power, and his loving provision.

Some of us might be facing difficulties and perils that seem insurmountable right now. Let us not forget that God is there, working behind the scenes in ways we cannot even imagine, forging circumstances together to accomplish his eternal purposes. We can trust in his unfailing love as we walk in his Spirit’s strength, knowing that nothing can thwart his will.

Father, thank you for sharing Esther’s story with us. It offers us an amazing look at how you provide solutions even before anyone even knows there is a problem. Please remind me of your amazing power and provision whenever I begin to worry about the “impossible” circumstances I or those I love are facing right now. Amen.
