“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14

The Israelites were quite a fickle group. God had done amazing miracles among them in Egypt. He had sent ten plagues to convince Pharaoh to let His people leave their captivity. But once the Israelites were finally free and on their way to the promised land, he changed his mind. Pharaoh sent his army to pursue them and bring them back. God’s Chosen People found themselves fleeing from a powerful army.

They reached the banks of the Red Sea, where there was seemingly no escape. So what did they do? They turned on their leader, Moses, and asked if he had led them into the desert to die.

I can’t be too hard on the Israelites. I’ve acted the same way many times. Even in the midst of God’s amazing power and provision, I whine when things get hard. I get tired of fighting. I complain if it seems like God isn’t doing His part to help me defeat the Egyptians I face day to day.

But thank God for his patience with me. Through all of the busyness and worry and the daily battles, God simply says, “Be still. I will fight for you.”

God won the battle against the Egyptian army. The Red Sea swallowed them up and Israel never saw them again.

God is a mighty warrior and He loves us. He wants to fight for us. Learn to be still and trust Him with the battle.

God, help me be still and trust You. I need You to fight this battle for me? I can’t do this on my own. Amen.
