I fell in love with my husband because he asks good questions—it’s a way that he imitates Jesus. In the Bible, we see Jesus asking questions all the time. Sometimes, he even answered questions with more questions.

This wasn’t for the sake of mystery or drama, but for the sake of relationship. Questions give space for conversation, and Jesus wants to talk with us. Questions also give us the freedom to not just take in someone else’s information, but internalize it through wrestling with the answer. As we see in today’s passage, questions are often how Jesus teaches.

Has God been asking you any questions? If so, what are they? If not, pause and listen. Like David in Psalm 139, ask God to search your heart.

And in turn, ask God your questions. If you want to know someone better and learn more about what they want, what do you do? You ask them questions. When my husband and I were first getting to know each other, those questions were general: what are you studying? What do you want to do with your life? But as we got closer and started to pursue marriage, they became more personal—and more uncomfortable. What do you believe about the Holy Spirit? What is your medical history? Would you ever go to therapy?

So ask God all your questions, especially the personal, uncomfortable ones, and listen for a response. Here are a few to ask God if you need a place to start:

How do you see me?
What do you want for my life?
What do you think of my relationships?
Is there anything you want to draw my attention to today?

Questions are also a great way to share about God with other people. There is a time for speaking the truth directly, but in the Bible we see Jesus and the disciples helping people understand God’s love through questions.

Lord, thank you for giving me the ability to learn and grow. Please help me to be curious about you and your creation. Is there anything you want to tell me today?

Throughout the Day: Today, choose a question from the list in today’s devotional and ask God it. Then, set a timer for five minutes and listen for an answer.
