David, the writer of this Psalm,e cried out to the Lord because he was overwhelmed. Maybe you feel overwhelmed right now - or maybe you know someone else who’s feeling that way. I visit these two verses frequently, and often encourage friends with them.
David understood the power of crying out, because he knew that God would hear. We see this assurance in Psalm 17:6 where David wrote, “I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words.”
Do you have that assurance in your heart? Though he knows our troubled thoughts, he wants us to express them to him. I liken being overwhelmed to a pot of soup that boiled over. It could only take so much heat before it overflowed.
I have found solace in the truth that Jesus is the rock of my salvation. He is impenetrable, steadfast, and immoveable. Years ago I was living in an old mobile park. My neighbor’s water heater exploded and created a ball of fire. I was hemmed in by fire equipment and couldn’t leave.
Fear overwhelmed me. My heart was racing. I sat down and said, “Jesus, you are my rock. I stand in you and I will not be shaken.” I said it over and over, until that truth snuffed out my fear and my body calmed.
Father, I am so grateful for your gift of salvation. No matter what overwhelming situation I face, you are right there present with me. I can look to you and hide in you. You are my shelter in the midst of every storm in my life.
Throughout this day: Remind yourself to call out to God, knowing that he hears and he is all you need. This song may help: Lord, I Need You
