Have you ever felt the need to exclude yourself from God's service because you believed you lacked the essential qualifications? There are various reasons why individuals hesitate, and age is occasionally one of them. I can feel Apostle Paul's love and sincere care in this passage of Scripture. “I believe in you”, even if it is expressed subtly, stands out. Given that the work ahead would demand perseverance, fortitude, a degree of faith, and love for God's people, it was imperative for Timothy to receive affirmation and guidance from Paul.

Gently but firmly, Paul proceeded to speak to Timothy, reminding him that his age is not a handicap. God would use him to serve a diverse congregation and, while he may feel scared, he should not allow anyone to disdain or look down on him. Rather, he could set an example for them.

Perhaps you are young and feel unworthy, or you are older and have succumbed to the thought of not serving because you believe your age is a barrier to service. It is easy to give up and limit God's ability to use us to have a significant impact on his kingdom.

Who then can serve? Everyone! When I read this verse, it inspires me to serve even more. I recognize my flaws as I serve but fully rely on Jesus for his strength and wisdom, and the Holy Spirit to lead and guide me to serve well. I am reminded of Caleb, who in his old age asked for more, ‘Give me this mountain’ (Joshua 14:12). The clarion call is for all believers to plug in. God does not only expect you and I to perform his assignment here on Earth, but he enables us by his Spirit! If you are still undecided, seek the Lord's guidance. Let us shake off all limitations. The work is plentiful. Start now, start somewhere. The impact will be immense, bringing God honor and filling your heart with joy and contentment.

PRAYER Heavenly Father, please forgive me for disqualifying myself from active duty. Give me the grace, strength, and wisdom to serve your people to the best of my ability. Remind me that I can rely on the Holy Spirit to lead me to where I am needed to make a difference, in Jesus' name, Amen.

Throughout the Day As you meditate on this section of Scripture, let Caleb's example and Paul's advice to Timothy motivate you to serve God. To serve where you are most needed, ask God to align you to his will.
