Have you ever experienced a blessing in disguise? Jacob did. Scripture tells us he didn’t particularly want or love Leah like he desired her sister, Rachel. But both were given to him as wives. Jacob believed Rachel, whom he loved, would be the one to bear him sons and carry on his legacy.

God had a better plan, using Leah as a blessing in disguise — literally and figuratively — to bear Jacob sons. One became the ancestor of God’s son, Jesus, our Savior.

In my own experience, I fell hard for a man who “disguised” himself as everything I thought I wanted. He lived a dark, hidden double life which later turned fatal. To continue a marriage under false pretense was not God’s plan or His best choice for me. When the marriage ended, God brought a male friend to my life who was in a sense my “Leah.” I was not physically attracted to him, but in time I was attracted to his loving nature, his calm demeanor, his sense of humor, and his trustworthiness. Thirty years later, with two grown children in our legacy, I am grateful to God for offering me such a blessing in disguise.

Perhaps you’ve had your own blessings in disguise? What may not seem the right choice or the right path to follow could very well be the one that brings you the most joy. You can trust God — your Father knows best.

Lord, in all my choices, please reveal to me the best one, so that I don’t waste my time on false disguises. I trust in you alone. Amen.
