What does it mean when a person sighs?

Healthline says that “Sighing is a type of long, deep breath. It begins with a normal breath, then you take a second breath before you exhale. We often associate sighs with feelings such as relief, sadness, or exhaustion… it’s often in connection with conveying a mood or emotion. They can also signal negative emotions like…despair.”

What do you long for? Our verse today says that God sees every longing and he hears your every sigh. David, who may have written this psalm, had a lot of reasons to sigh, especially in his pathway leading to the throne. His greatest desire was to love and serve God with all of his heart (a most noble life goal), but he faced obstacles and temptation on a daily basis. This could have sidetracked even the most fervent child of God.

What is standing in your way and is making your walk with God more difficult today? God hears your sighing heart. He wants to encourage and strengthen you in your walk with him each minute of your life, if you will let him.

Father God, thank you for being attentive to both my longings and sighs. I entrust them to you today and pray for your deliverance from whatever is standing in my way! Amen.

For Today: Every time you hear yourself sighing today, make a point of asking God for his help and protection.
