”Water... I need water!” My body urges whenever I've walked a long distance or completed a strenuous workout. The refreshing nature of those first sips of cool water is unlike anything ever tasted, even though I've had water before. There's nothing like having a raging thirst quenched.

During the extreme heat of the day, an adulterous and ashamed woman came to draw water. She knew no one else would be around to judge her. She would avoid the crowds and be able to come and go without being noticed — except by Jesus who was sitting beside the well, waiting for her. Not only were Jews forbidden to go into Samaria but a Jewish man interacting with a Samaritan woman was unacceptable. Yet that’s exactly what He did. He saw her thirst for more than water.

Jesus' knowledge of her sinful ways perplexed, yet, humbled her. He boldly, but lovingly, spoke to the depths of her soul that was crying out for life. One that Jesus offered her in verse 14. Something about this Man’s words of saving grace, forgiveness, and limitless love satiated her thirst for fulfillment.

Do you overflow with the living water of Jesus? Does He satisfy everything in you that thirsts? No spiritual thirst can be truly quenched by anything but Jesus. He is the living water that satisfies every space within you that is dry. Receive this wellspring of life each day through prayer, reading God's Word, and in living your life as a reflection of Christ.

Precious Jesus, thank you for meeting the thirsty Samaritan woman. Thank you for meeting us at the place of our sin and quenching our longing for fulfillment. Outside of you, no thirst will ever be satisfied for you are the wellspring of life that we need to draw from. Help us to always be thirsty for the water you offer. To drink of it deeply until it overflows from us onto others in need of the same. In your holy name I pray, Amen.

Go deeper ― As you read today's verse, let it seep deeply into you, doing away with the things you've looked to for satisfaction and allowing the living water of Christ to quench you.
