Do you remember when you were in high school, or maybe you are in high school, and as your senior year approached more and more people began to ask you, “What do you want to do with your life?”

As I’ve gotten closer to graduation I have been asked this often and it has often sparked anxiety and confusion. What do I want to do? What should I do? What is God’s calling in my life?

In North America, our calling is often defined as the job that one does. Choosing what we want to do with our lives can be a heavy weight for a lot of us, and sometimes, half-way through life, we realize that maybe the path we chose wasn’t the one we really wanted.

However, your calling isn’t something that you are called to “do” with your life, a check you earn, or a title at work. It’s something you are to “be”. In today’s reading, Jesus sought out his disciple Matthew. He saw him sitting at the tax collector’s booth and simply said, “Follow me.” And Matthew followed.

You aren’t called to do BIG things in life. Your higher calling is to come when Jesus calls and to obey him. Draw near, and spend your life following his Word. Even if it’s just being faithful during the mundane moments of life, that is enough. Your worth isn’t based on works, you are defined through the worth that God gives you — a worth that comes from and is found only in Christ.

Lord, help me to be bold enough to follow you even if I don't know what it is you want me to do. All you want is my willingness, and you will equip me to do your will. Amen.
