As my husband and I grow older, I sometimes tease him about his groaning. Obviously, we all have more aches and pains as we age, and the years “take a toll” on our bodies. As my dad used to say, “getting older is not for wimps!”

Regardless of your physical or emotional challenges today, you can identify with David in your anguish (grieving spirit) or affliction (physical ailment). God is your strength in times of groaning.

Did you know that the earth is also groaning along with you? I was reminded of this verse when I researched the topic of groaning. While it likens this groaning to childbirth (which you may or may not be able to identify with), the promise of deliverance is an encouraging one. A new birth happens as a result of childbirth, and new life results from a painful experience.

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Romans 8:22

Whether your groaning is an issue of a body getting older and bones getting weaker, or your spirit is in anguish right now, I hope that you can say, along with David, in the midst of his time of groaning:

But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” Psalm 31:14

Just as God delivered the people of Israel who groaned many years under Egyptian slavery, he will deliver you! (Exodus 2:24 and 6:25) He remembers his covenant with you, as his child, redeemed through the blood of Jesus, so commit your groaning to him!

Father God, you hear my groans, whatever is causing them! I look to you for deliverance today, as I trust in you as my God. Amen.

For Today: Each time you find yourself uttering a groan today, thank God for his covenant. Deliverance is coming!
