“Are you looking for prayer? Yes? Great! I’m Sheyvah. How can I pray for you?” This is how I often start to pray with people after our church’s worship service.
When you serve the Lord, sometimes you get to serve him on Sundays. My husband and I are planning to start going with some fellow church members to visit prisoners on Sundays to share about Jesus. I try to have my “sabbath” or day of rest on Saturdays because that is the day that works best for my current schedule.
Jesus had some run-ins with the Pharisees (Jewish religious leaders) who wanted to make sure that he was not “working” on the day of rest. He told them that God allows us to do good works on the Lord’s Day, as our verse for today states.
I need to prioritize a weekly day of rest because it is God’s command. It is also a gift from him which allows God to recharge, refresh, and restore my soul (Psalm 23:3). But I don’t need to be legalistic about which day I take to rest. Let us take time to spend a day with God once a week: to enjoy him, his word, naps, nature, and family.
Dear Lord, thank you that you have given us a command to rest. Thank you for the ability to serve you. Help me to serve well and rest well, all for your glory. Amen.
Throughout this day praise God for the gift of a weekly rest. Open it and discover its delights with him.
