Breakfast is often called 'the most important meal of the day. It replenishes to boost your energy levels and alertness and provide other essential nutrients required for good health. Jesus made this invitation to his disciples in today's passage.

After Jesus’ resurrection, Simon Peter and six other disciples decided to go fishing (John 21:3). They went out in the sea but caught nothing all night. Jesus was already there at dawn and saw their frustrations. He knew they needed help, called out to them and told them exactly where to go fishing.

At that time, Jesus had already prepared fish and bread for breakfast and was ready to serve them. This was such an important time of the day! Soon after, the disciples caught lots of fish. Breakfast was already in place and Jesus wanted to spend time with them.

Bread is a nutritious food mentioned so many times in the Bible. The Word of God which nourished the crowds does the same for us today. What an important lesson for us to learn! It definitely applies to us both physically and spiritually because he says, “I am the bread of life” in John 6:35.

The morning can be such a significant time to spend time with Jesus. Just as he prepared a healthy breakfast for the disciples, he invites us each morning to come into his presence.

Perhaps we wake up feeling exhausted, confused, and frustrated, like how the disciples with empty nets wondered how they would handle their frustrations throughout the day. This is such a great reminder that Jesus invites us to his banqueting table to partake of all he wants to offer. He wants to satisfy the deep hunger in our souls before we face the new challenges of the day. But, we have a role to play and we need to be intentional. We need to make room for him and spend time in his presence.

The disciples had good intentions. They made a move by choosing to go fishing that day and Jesus met them. I noticed that after the breakfast, Jesus focused on Simon Peter and asked him three times: “Do you love me?” (John 21:15). It is significant here that Jesus’ focus was on Peter! This made me realize how he cares enough to focus on individuals. Jesus wants each of us to find time to be with him alone so he can speak to us like he spoke with Peter that day.

It doesn’t have to be just breakfast. You could have coffee with the King too! As my friend often calls it, what an honour to be with the King! Have a conversation and develop a deeper relationship. David says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him” (Psalm 34:8).

Dear Lord, Thank you for the personal invitation you make available for me daily to develop a closer relationship with you. Please help me to take the step of faith so that I can experience this and grow deeper in you as I listen, pray and read your Word. Help me to trust you and allow the Holy Spirit to guide me in my next steps. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Throughout this Day: Make room for God to speak to you. You were created to hear God. He is always speaking in unexpected ways. Perhaps with a deep sense of peace when you’ve been heavy and burdened! Or it could be just experiencing his presence, through a scripture verse that comes alive! Come into his presence today with expectancy and listen to what he wants to say! He longs to speak to you!
