“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.” Psalm 84:11 (ESV)

In college I worked over thirty hours a week while attending classes full-time. I worked out way too hard and took a leadership role in campus ministry. At the time, I thought that following Jesus meant pushing yourself to the max. Many of those days I had terrible headaches and several times I ended up at the doctor’s office with vague but troubling symptoms. It took me several years to realize that I was taking on more than was healthy for me.

In Psalms 84 we see that if we live rightly, God will not hold back from us. It’s tempting to think that if we don’t exhaust ourselves and try to “do it all” we will miss out on blessings God has to offer, but that’s not biblical.

I have learned about taking care of myself emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I get to bed earlier. I do something special to wind down each evening. I spend time reading God’s word, listening for what His plans are for my limited hours each day. Today, lets remember and accept God’s promise of good things for us!

Dear Lord,

You have made me with a desire to do many things. You have chosen to show me that I cannot do it all, but Lord, many days I wonder which things should be done. Help me to know what to do and what to set down today. Thank you for Your wonderful gifts of grace and glory, especially as I walk in You. Help me to do just that today and always!

In Jesus Name,  Amen

Take Action:

Take out a piece of paper. At the top of it, write three columns, one labeled “emotional,” one labeled “physical,” and one labeled “spiritual.” Post it on your fridge and commit to doing one thing per day to refuel in these vital areas of self-care. However you choose to refuel, don’t miss out on the sweet moments of life your Father wants to bless you with today.
