I often need to let things steep in my heart and mind, much like a good pot of tea. Lately I’ve been pondering a thought from Dr. Myles Munroe’s book, Understanding the Purpose and Power of Prayer.

“The backbone of prayer is our agreement with God’s Word.”

Often, I determine what would be the best answer in my situations and then ask God, in faith, to accomplish it. Praying Scripture is sometimes a part of that. Yet God began to challenge my heart to ask him first what his Word says about what I am praying for. How could I agree with his Word in the things that I felt moved to pray for?

Here are 10 truths I discovered about praying according to his Word.

  1. When praying for people who seem oblivious to God’s care for them. Show them the wonder of Your great love, O Lord (Psalm 17:7).

  2. When praying for people who seem directionless in their work. Establish the work of their hands, O Lord (Psalm 90:17).

  3. When praying for someone who sincerely desires to walk in God’s ways. Since they live by the Spirit, help them keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-20).

  4. When praying for people who are tempted to go back into their old ways. Thank You Lord that it is for freedom that you have set us free. Help them to stand firm and not be entangled again in this slavery (Galatians 5:1).

  5. When praying for someone who is confused about how to live.
Lord, help them not to conform to the patterns of the world but to be transformed by the renewing of their mind so they can discern your will for their life (Romans 12:2).

  6. When praying for someone who is distracted spiritually by acquiring things. Lord, help them to set their affections on things above and not on things on the earth (Colossians 3:2).

  7. When praying for someone who is despondent and broken-hearted. Lord, restore their soul and lead them in right paths for the sake of your name (Psalm 23).

  8. When praying for people who need to commit their life to Jesus. Thank you Lord that you are patient and desire that everyone comes to repentance. Help them choose to turn their life over into your hands (2 Peter 3:9).

  9. When praying for someone who desires a spouse, a new job, or a change. Thank you Lord that you will perfect that which concerns them today (Psalm 138:8).

  10. When praying for those worn out in ministry. Lord, may they be energized today as they live their life for you and your mission
    (Matthew 28:19).

How can you use the Scriptures to shape your prayers today?
