What is The Life commitment?
The Life commitment begins when you pray this prayer:
Dear Jesus, I want you in the center of my life and commit, through your power, to serve and obey you – anytime, anywhere, at any cost, to do anything.
You don’t have to use those exact words. What’s important is that you’re deciding to make your entire life about following and serving Jesus – no holding back. What comes after that? Join the Life community. Together we’ll learn how to make our lives count for Christ.
What is The Life card?
The Life card is a tangible reminder of your commitment to living a life completely available God. The card doesn’t do anything – the card is not the commitment. It is simply a visual reminder of the prayer you prayed.
Why do I need a card?
Often making a decision is the easy part; living out that decision day by day is much harder. Anytime you’re making a change it helps to have a visual reminder of what you’re trying to do. The Life card fits in your wallet so that every time you take it out you’re reminded of your decision to be available to God anytime, anywhere, at any cost, to do anything.
How do I get a card?
A card is included in The 35 Day Challenge resource kit. You can also request a card and we will mail one to you, free of charge.
What if I can’t keep up with the commitment?
You might think this an impossible commitment to live out – that it would be just a matter of time before you got off track. A) You’re right. B) Don’t let that stop you.
A few things to remember:
- We’re going to sin. If we’re humble and honest about that, He forgives us – again and again (1 John 1:9-10).
- It’s when we’re at our weakest that God’s strength shows most clearly in our lives (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).
- God will never give up on you, or the good work He’s begun in your life (Philippians 1:6).
The important thing is not being perfect. It’s “forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead” (Philippians 3:13).
If I make this commitment, will God ask me to do what I don’t want to do?
It’s common to wonder just how far being available to God goes. What if God sends me to Africa? What if He wants me to do something I hate? What we’re really asking is, “Can I trust God to be kind to me? Do I need to protect myself from His plans?”
The simple answer is No. No, you don’t need to protect yourself from God. You can trust that while God’s plans might not always be comfortable, they always have your best interests at heart.
Remember the promise in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
When we’re working in the purpose God has for us, it’s not a burden. It’s not necessarily easy, but God will equip you for the work He has called you to.
How can I get others involved?
The easiest way to get other people involved is to tell them what you’ve been doing. Talk about what God is teaching you. Show them your Life card and challenge them to pray the prayer. Invite them to take The 35 Day Challenge http://35daychallenge.ca . Offer to be their prayer partner. You can find more resources on talking to your pastor and getting your small group involved in the “Invite Others” section.
Why is The Life so focused on evangelism?
We passionately believe that a vibrant Christian life centers around telling others about Jesus. This may sound like a radical message, but it’s not. Many of us have gotten so busy doing other things – good things – that we’ve shifted our focus away from evangelism.
Social justice issues are incredibly important but making life better here on Earth is not the ultimate goal of the Christian faith. Matthew 16:26 reminds us that, “What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” We absolutely need to care for the immediate needs of the people around and we need to care widows and orphans, for the oppressed and the abused. But if we truly care for them we cannot stop at caring for their bodies; we must care for their souls as well.
The best way to see the importance of evangelism is to try it for yourself. Take The 35 Day Challenge, start having conversations about Jesus with the people in your world and see how it affects your faith. We promise you won’t be disappointed.
