“Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14

My wife and I just established a no cell phone time after supper. After a long day at work it’s really easy to escape into the digital world instead of being present with our kids.

Jesus had a way of making people feel incredibly valued. Amidst chaotic crowds and so much good work to do, He took the time to listen compassionately and be present. Everyone was worth his time! He built His kingdom day by day in the people society often deemed less significant.

When someone gives you their undivided attention, you feel important, heard, and loved. As theologian David Augsburger says, “Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person, they are almost indistinguishable.”

Will you love others like that today? Will you truly be present with family, co-workers, or even a stranger you strike up a conversation with?

Jesus is still at work building His kingdom in those whom many ignore. Today is our chance to partner with Him by listening compassionately to others.

Jesus, thank You for treasuring and welcoming us as Your children. Please help us remove distractions and overcome selfishness in order to give others the time and attention they deserve. Amen.

Take Action

Be present today in your relationships and conversations. Listen well. Don’t even share your opinion; just see what happens. Use the insights you gain to better respond to the needs of others.
