“If you love me, keep my commands… so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what My Father has commanded me.”  John 14:15,31

Obedience is beautiful. It’s an intimate word. In my journey of obeying Jesus, the LORD untangles my heart from harmful things, He reveals Himself, teaches me to trust Him, and heals me in the process. To be fully alive in Christ and to walk into all the freedom and joy that can be ours, we have to obey Jesus.

Jesus’ words in today’s Scripture passage saved my life.

As we read more into this part of the Gospel, Jesus calmed His worried disciples by explaining that their relationship with Him would continue through the Holy Spirit. His words of comfort for the disciples ring just as true to us today:

“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.” (v. 21)

“Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.”  (v.23)

“Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching.  These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.”  (v. 24)

His message is very clear!

Jesus’ command to obey includes numerous promises to the one who does obey Him.  A Counsellor is given and dwells within you (the Holy Spirit).  The Father will love you and the Father and Son will make their home within you.  Peace will be given to you.

When we don’t obey, we pull away from relationship; but, when we do obey, our obedience signifies that we believe that He knows best.

His words will save our lives.

LORD, give me an undivided heart that is willing to obey You, regardless of the cost.  In my journey of obeying You, untangle my heart and lead me into all the freedom and joy You have for me.

Take Action

Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart and reveal any part of your life or heart that is living in disobedience to the LORD and His commands.  Confess what the LORD brings to mind and ask Him what steps to take to walk in obedience.  Follow through on whatever the LORD shows you to do!
