“Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen, and I will tell you where to get food that is good for the soul!” Isaiah 55:2

We live in a culture that is starving. Whether it be a hunger for love, significance, or peace, we all seek to fill the void. But is that so bad? If a man is hungry, is he wrong to seek food?

In the Bible we see that our hunger—another way to say “desire”—is logical, and in many cases, given to us by God. We grow hungry and food sustains us. But what makes less sense is a person who lets his hunger for meat lead him to buy a cheap fast food burger.

Why are we so good at wasting our money and time trying to fill the void created by our natural desires? The advertising world spends millions trying to sell us the next “big thing” to revolutionize our lives and make our experiences better. But in the end, it’s just like that greasy, fast food burger that sits in the pit of your stomach and leaves you feeling dissatisfied.

My challenge for all of us this summer, with so many exciting things happening, is to remember the value of investing time in Sabbath rest with God. After all, He is the only One who can give us what we really need. Let’s sit in the presence of the Most High God and be filled by Him.

What are some of the good, God-given things you desire, and how has the enemy tried to use substitute solutions to draw you away from Him?

Your cell phone can’t make you happy. Try this.

Dear Jesus, I thank You for allowing us to enter into Your presence through prayer. I ask, Father, that You help us in our hunger. May we not sin against You by seeking other things to satisfy us. Remind us more and more what it means to be satisfied in You. Amen

Take Action

This Summer, take advantage of your deck or a quiet spot outside. Make it your go-to place once, twice, or ever three times a week to have distraction free time resting in God’s presence.
