Is the Presidential Campaign Too Long?

After almost two years of campaigning we are (finally) less than two months away from the Presidential election.  In Canada, their entire campaign and election will take place in less time than that.  How long does it take to pick a President? Is two years too long?

Although as a Canadian I won’t be voting in the upcoming US election, I must say I’ll be relieved when it’s over. It does seem like it’s been going on forever. By now people are just so tired of it that they might stop caring, which would be a terrible thing given the importance of deciding who will run one of the most powerful countries in the world!

I’ve been interested in the US politics since I started watching “West Wing” a few years ago. It’s all quite fascinating, including the presidential campaigning, and it really does seem to be an artform to see who can market themselves the best.

I do think it’s too long, unnecessarily drawing out the issues and maybe even confusing the voters (and potential voters). But like Darren talked about, maneuvering the “most powerful person in the world” into place must be a complicated process!

    Martin Sheen for president!

Martin Sheen for President — now there’s a candidate I could get behind. It’s hard to imagine how incredibly complicated the role of President must be. It’s not as if you have the opportunity to sit behind that famous desk and “do the right thing”, instead he’s so often forced to choose between two equally bad options or two things equally worth saving. (Or maybe a President would dream of a day when there were only two…)

I heard a quote once that this electoral process doesn’t necessarily pick the best president, rather it judges the person who’s best at campaigning, but I have no idea how else it would work in a democracy. Maybe it should be more like a job interview with each candidate asked the same set of questions and required to back up each answer with verifiable examples of their actions in the past?
